History of Reflex Touch
Morrell Reflex Touch, formerly known as Morrell Reflexology, was developed in the 1980s by Patricia Morrell. A successful businesswoman, mother and acclaimed psychic with a medical secretarial background, Patricia first came into contact with Reflexology when she sought treatment for intractable back pain when living in South Wales.
Whilst having, what was for her, a painful but beneficial treatment, Pat received an intuitive ‘message' that she should learn from her experience of this treatment. She received further intuitive or psychic instruction to expand and develop a form of healing therapy that would be painless and more effective. Pat was able to carry out treatments that were far more advanced than the understanding of many conventional Reflexologists.
Pat was able to research and develop her own therapy technique, Morrell Reflexology (which would become known as Morrell Reflex Touch), and the possibility of using it to diagnose, something that traditional Reflexology had previously not done. Through her links with Dr Nokes, Professor of Forensic Science, and Mr Mackie, a leading surgeon, she was able to run and complete two hospital trials - at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary and the Prince of Wales Hospital, both in South Wales.
In both trials the brief was to provide treatment to post-operative patients recovering from hip or knee replacement surgery that would stabilise blood pressure and offer pain relief. Both trials (one informal, one formal, and both involving the hospital staff and controlled conditions) produced results that showed Morrell Reflexology to be clinically safe, to balance blood pressure, to reduce the need for pain relief by up to 40%, and for patients to be ready and able for discharge from hospital between 3/5 days earlier than historically expected.
Pat has also worked with a section of the Cardiff football team, their team doctor and physiotherapist, testing the diagnostic and recuperative capabilities of the therapy. HTV television went on to produce a television documentary on the subject of Pat and Morrell Reflexology. Featuring Professor Len Nokes and Cardiff University statisticians, the documentary showed that Pat was able to correctly diagnose many more conditions using Morrell Reflexology than would be possible by ‘chance' alone.
Pat went on to set up a training school in Chepstow, teaching many students Morrell Reflexology and a more recently developed therapy, Aqua Touch. She successfully ran the school until the late 1990s when she retired from teaching and moved to Essex with the intention of continuing to practise the therapy.
When she met Samantha Selby, a recently qualified Reflexologist, and agreed to teach her the technique, Pat was filled with enthusiasm for teaching once again. She decided to set up the Morrell School of Complementary Medicine in Essex. It had become obvious to Pat that the technique had naturally evolved into a therapy in its own right. Morrell Reflex Touch became a recognised technique listed by The Institute of Complementary and Natural Medicine (ICNM) and The Complementary Medical Association (CMA).
Samantha Selby completed her teacher training and assisted Pat with the running of the school until Pat's retirement in 2006, when she handed over the training baton fully to Samantha.
Samantha Selby now teaches Morrell Reflex Touch at the Kelvedon Complementary Health Centre (KCHC) in Essex. Patricia Morrell acts as Examiner for the training that Samantha provides, and continues to practise via her own clinic.
